The same grain size number could be supplied with either character, which is exactly why the full grain specification deserves attention.
Bond hardness, coolant delivery, wheel speed, and feed rate further modify how the abrasive behaves in service. These process parameters interact with grain characteristics, so a specification that performs well on one machine may behave differently on another.
Two grinding wheels with an identical grain size marking cannot be assumed to have the same abrasive working state. Buyers and engineers should compare grain shape, strength, surface state, and abrasive grade together, and validate real performance against their actual grinding conditions before standardizing a specification. This approach leads to more reliable tooling, more stable production, and fewer surprises on the shop floor.
